Rock and Pop: Coming Up - Balkan Beat Box at Dingwalls

• NOT many artists look to their grandparents for musical inspiration, but for Tamir Muskat and Ori Kaplan the music of their ancestors is the very foundation of their band’s fresh sound.

Known collectively as Balkan Beat Box, the Israeli-born, New York-based outfit fuse traditional Jewish klezmer music with a gaggle of modern influences, including hip-hop, ragga and breakbeat.

Imagine a furiously hedonistic Jewish wedding. Now imagine KRS-One doing a spot of karaoke with the house band, who happen to have hired Diplo to soup-up the sound for the night. You’re now some way towards BBB’s raucous collision of musical traditions.

As part of a short European tour, the band bring their famously high-energy live show to Dingwalls on April 14. Expect a frenetic party, served up with oodles of chutzpah.

Balkan Beat Box at Dingwalls, Middle Yard, Camden Lock NW1. 7.30pm, £16.
