The ever-growing number of film clubs across the capital now includes one in the swanky surrounds of West End hotel, One Aldwych.
It’s situated just off the Strand in Covent Garden, and I have watched many private screenings in their basement cinema.
I’m thrilled to learn they plan to throw the doors open to all for screenings on Fridays and Saturdays – you can eat in their restaurants afterwards to discuss the visual treats consumed earlier.
I note that Jane Eyre screens tomorrow and The King’s Speech the following week.
I’ll be heading down soon to run the rule over this new club and will report back.
While on the subject of nice places to watch films other than a multiplex, the Dartmouth Arms pub in York Rise, NW5, is screening the Ryan Gosling hit Drive on Monday night in their rather comfortable back room. It is free and they will be serving up food and drinks throughout.
I was fortunate enough to get a sneak preview of their drop-down screen in action and can vouch for the quality.
Meanwhile, I note that the ICA are screening a week-long run of Marx Reloaded.
A fascinating documentary, it considers the relevance of the German philosopher’s thoughts to today’s global economic crisis.
It also includes some of today’s big thinkers, such as Slovoj Zizek, and makes complicated and grand issues simple to understand.
