THE night of July 4, 1990, will forever be etched on my mind. I was sitting in a flat in Sandstone Place, Highgate Newtown, with two school friends. We watched Gazza and Gary Lineker spearhead England’s tragic attempt to win the World Cup, and the semi-final defeat was a standout moment of my teenage years.
As we all know, it ended in tears, going out on penalties, though I have to admit I was almost happy after Gazza got his second yellow: to have played in the final without him would have been almost too much for me to bear.
I’m reminded of this evening through the auspices of the wonderful documentary, One Night In Turin.
The film is part of the Kicking and Screening Film Festival, which focusses on the beautiful game.
It kicks off (groan) on September 23 and not only does it boast loads of great football-related film, there is another reason to check out the various flicks on offer in the Everyman chain of cinemas – it boasts guests appearances from the one and only Ossie Ardiles.
Other stars appearing include New York Cosmos star Shep Messing, Aston Villa legend Charlie Aitken, Man City veteran Mike Summerbee and former Ipswich centre-back Russell Osman.
The latter trio all featured in the hugely ridiculous but still fun Escape to Victory, which will close the festival.
