Colin Andrew

Colin Andrew became a book and magazine illustrator

Published: 28 February, 2013

COLIN Andrew, a magnificent artist and cartoonist who was keen to support the Camden New Journal after its launch 31 years ago, has died in hospital.

Colin, who lived in Rochester Road, Camden Town, had been a cartoonist for the Daily Express in the 1950s and 1960s, and later became a book and magazine illustrator much in demand by publishers.

A man of decided left-wing ideas, Colin and his wife Janet worked as teachers in China in the mid-1960s. Within a short time of the New Journal hitting the streets he volunteered to support it with cartoons and illustrations, and became a regular contributor for several years.

He was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead and died last week.

He is survived by Janet and daughters Catriona and Shona. His funeral is at Golders Green crematorium at 11.30am on Wednesday.

A full obituary will appear next week.
