West Hampstead cyclists can go against the traffic flow, say Camden Council

Published: 26 January 2012

CONTROVERSIAL plans to allow cyclists to go against the flow of traffic on many of West Hampstead’s roads have been given the go-ahead by Camden Council.

Cyclists will be allowed to go the wrong way up one-way streets on six roads including the busy C11 route of Canfield Gardens.

Bikes will also be allowed to go “contra-flow” along Priory Road, Greencroft Gardens, Messina Avenue, Fairhazel Gardens and Kingsgate Place.

Contra-flow cycling will not be put in on Sherriff Road, Gascony Avenue or Smyrna Road.

To ease fears of dangerous cycling on Canfield Gardens the council says it will only put in the changes if another measure is also included to enable cyclists to safely navigate the corner – such as a sheltered cycle channel on Canfield Gardens.

The announcement comes after a consultation with residents on the roads affected at the end of last year.
