IT has been the stout of choice in pubs for decades, but one brewery is determined to challenge the long reign of Guinness with a new brew.
The Camden Town Brewery, which is actually based in Kentish Town, has been in business for just a year, but its popularity has grown at an astonishing rate with pubs stocking it’s products up and down the country.
Its latest tipple – Camden Ink – hit the kegs for the first time over Christmas.
Launched by Jasper Cuppaidge in the basement of Heath Street favourite The Horseshoe, the brewery moved to Kentish Town in April 2010 and has now created a £2million brewery packed full of high-end German engineering.
Mark Dredge, who works at the brewery, said: “Stout, which Guinness evolved from, was actually a London beer originally, but it became very popular in Ireland.
“When Guinness saw how much of this beer was being imported to Ireland he decided to make it himself and added roasted barley, which are kind of like coffee beans.”
He added: “The history and heritage of the drink is really from London and we wanted to rediscover that.
“Guinness is served in every single bar in London and so it is the obvious beer to challenge.
Our brewmaster, Rob Gargan, is Irish and Camden Ink is a recipe he developed himself – he brewed a batch, tried it out and it was brilliant first time.”
