ONE of the chief organisers of the Hampstead Conservative party and a key member of Brian Coleman’s election campaign has been forced to flee the Maldives after unwittingly flying into the middle of a turbulent change of government.
The New Journal can reveal how David Douglas was pulled out of the islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean by Tory Party HQ on Tuesday amid fears for his safety.
There have been unconfirmed reports of beatings in the streets, and pictures distributed by news agencies on the ground this week showed violent skirmishes said to have been caused by a police mutiny.
“The whole thing was just surreal,” Mr Douglas said last night (Wednesday), back home after spending almost two days on planes.
“It’s only once you get out and look at the internet and see what’s going on that you realise how scary it could have been.”
As one of the brains behind the Conservative challenge which helped turn Glenda Jackson’s Hampstead parliamentary seat from a Labour stronghold to a marginal in 2010, Mr Douglas is part of a Tory scheme to train would-be politicians in “emerging democracies” abroad.
He had headed to the Maldives with another Conservative organiser to show activists from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) how to leaflet effectively and to retain and recruit members.
The MDP won the country’s first ever democratic elections four years ago and has been credited with improving infrastructure and investing in healthcare.
But as Mr Douglas was flying to the city of Malé on Tuesday, the MDP’s president Mohammed Nasheed stepped down – he later claimed he had been forced to resign.
New president Waheed Hassan denied claims that the change at the top represented a “coup d’état” and that Nasheed had only been held in police custody for his own protection.
President Nasheed made headlines across the world two years ago when his cabinet donned scuba-diving gear to hold a ministerial meeting underwater – a stunt aimed at showing how the Maldives is under threat from rising sea levels.
According to reports, rebel police officers joined opponents of the president in a protest against the removal of a high-profile judge and the simmering tensions exploded this week. The Foreign Office said it was monitoring developments “with concern”.
Mr Douglas last year helped political organisers in Uganda but is more used to the rather less fiery battles in Hampstead, where he is helping Mr Coleman’s bid to fend off the Labour challenge for the Barnet and Camden seat at May’s London Assembly elections. He was also one of the organisers who helped former Camden councillor Chris Philp come within a whisker of unseating Glenda Jackson in 2010 – losing by just 42 votes.
Mr Douglas, whose trip was organised by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, said he had lost track of which day was which after travelling through time zones and being ordered home after just hours in the Maldives.
“I turned on my phone and there was a message which said, ‘there has been a change of government, you need to leave now’,” he said.
“There were reports of people who were the equivalent of us who were being beaten. Our safety could not be guaranteed and at that point it wasn’t a question of when’s the next cheapest plane, it was get out whatever the cost.”

Sad day ...
Dear Mr. Osley,
Its unfortunate that you heard about our police service beating people up. But truth be told, they were only trying to control a mob that charged towards their headquarters. I have never heard one report, not a single report, that our police service was beating up or harassing a tourist or a guest to our country.
It is sad that you had to leave so abruptly.
Maldives has much to offer to a visitor, may be you can come back and visit us later to see the real Maldives.
Regards from Maldives to all the people of the UK. We have always looked up to you and we will continue to do so in the future.
Thank you.
One sided politician?
Can someone please define what One sided politician is? Mohamed nasheed cannot represent multiple parties he is a member of Maldivian Democratic Party and a true representative of the rights of the people regardless of parties. He brought us the taste of freedom, he showed us what humanity was . He is our hero and inshah allah he will bring to justice all who was involved in the coup and reinstate him as our president again with the coming election.
The coup d'etat in the Maldives
Like David, I have made regular visits to help promote democracy and encourage people to vote.
What is going on is that the first democratically elected President, Mohammed Nasheed, has been deposed and arrested by a group linked to his predecessor Gayroum - a corrupt dictator - and some Islamist fundamentalists. Gayroum's people were frightened that they would be prosecuted for corruption (such as, what they did with the tsunami contributions) and the extremists objected to a UN observer's criticism of their wish to flog women in public and similar atrocities.
Even now they are bo doubt torturing him and some of his colleagues; just as they did for many years before he was elected; Amnesty International can confirm this. For almost half of his life before he was elected, he was imprisoned by Gayroum and severely tortured. Since his election he has been a leading environmentalist, since the 1,200 small islands which make up the Maldives - none of them more than 2.7 metres above sea level - are being severely affected by climate change. Perhaps it is time for those who so strongly supported his message on the dangers of rising sea levels to make themselves heard?

Hi if you are worried about WFD please visit its website It works with all 3 main stream UK parties and in full open to public review.
http://www.wfd.org/
Opening page sums it up -
Established in 1992, WFD is an independent public body sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, from which it receives an annual grant. Over the years we have grown in strength and diversity, working to achieve sustainable political change in emerging democracies. Working with and through partner organisations, we seek to strengthen the institutions of democracy, principally political parties (through the work of the UK political parties), parliaments and the range of institutions that make up civil society. We believe that, for a democracy to flourish, all of these institutions must be strong and sustainable
Westminster Foundation for Democracy?
Just what exactly was this Tory chap doing in the Maldives and what business is it of his or the shady outfit he works for, The Westminster Foundation for Democracy? This is the British equivalent of NED, The National Endowment for Democracy, a rightwing organisation that was behind the so called Arab Spring fake revolutions and the destruction of Libya.
Westminster Foudation
Look on its website - it funds all 3 UK parties to assist sister parties in emerging democracies.

non of the foreigners are beaten
i have not heard of a foreigner beaten so far in this protest. this is our internal matter. how all the Maldivians view tourists is the very people who feed them by spending holiday here.
Could you please give examples of those foreigners who are beaten?
You people just see one side
As a Maldivian and as a founder member of MDP first I have to say is that you don't have a clue what nasheed was doing to the rest of the country he just defends his party and his one sided politician I'm ashamed that people like you don't even bother to ask anyone what really is going on.I would not say that I'm happy with what's going on however I don't have any sympathy for nasheed even cause we supported him with very high hopes and he and his saw Maldives as there own private co so please next time when you write please follow the event of the past one year or so
