PENSIONERS and sick children were among those to benefit from the fundraising efforts of pupils from Haverstock School in Chalk Farm.

Year 7 students visited Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children on Friday to present a cheque for more than £270. And earlier this month, Year 10 pupils donated £500 they had raised towards the Chalk Farm Salvation Army over-60s club’s annual seaside trip.

The cash was raised during separate business projects including a £10 team challenge, where pupils had to use their skills to turn the small sum into as much cash as possible.

Sweet Treat, who won the £10 challenge, raised £99 for the children’s hospital by selling sweets and offering manicures and massages to teachers.

Year 10 pupils spent eight months selling hot chocolate and cold milkshakes to raise money for the OAPs.

Salvation Army officer Ian Stanley said the donation meant 25 members could go on a trip to Broadstairs and Ramsgate free of charge, despite the high cost of hiring a coach.

Pensioner Joan Summers, who became an adherent of the Salvation Army last year, said: “It was a lovely day. With the Salvation Army you feel like part of a big family.”
