HIGH above the Oasis swimming pool in Holborn, this is the sight of the first “green roof” to be laid on a council block in Camden.
The top of 93-flat Dudley Court, which runs alongside the leisure centre in Endell Street, has been covered in vegetation.
As tempting as the patch of green and the panoramic views may look, it cannot be used as a communal garden.
But the idea is to use green roofs across Camden to combat climate change by reducing heat loss at roof level and upping biodiversity.
The green roofs will also have improved sound insulation.
Labour housing chief Councillor Julian Fulbrook said: “Building a green roof is a great technique that cities can use to help combat climate change, as well as to increase biodiversity and improve air quality.”
Students at University College London are analysing the effects of green roofs and will use the estate’s new addition as a case study.
Cllr Fulbrook added: “The roof at Dudley Court will make the building more energy efficient, keeping it cool in summer and warm in winter.
“It’s good news for the environment and residents’ fuel bills.
“We are also happy the new green roof will complement some other excellent initiatives, with a wild garden on the rooftop nearby, complete with a beehive.”
