JANET Suzman, actor and writer, could have found herself in an embarrassing situation.
She was due to take part in the launch of a collection of Hungarian poems on the theme of the Holocaust.
The event was due to take place at the Hungarian embassy – but that was before a letter, signed by Suzman (pictured) appeared in the Guardian condemning the appointment of a Budapest theatre director accused of supporting an anti-Semitic party.
It’s part of a rumbling of anti-semitism in Hungary which could have made for an uncomfortable reading of the poems at the embassy.
The poems are published in a book, I Lived the Earth, collated by a Hungarian poet George Gomori who lives in South Hampstead and his actor wife, Mari.
Fortunately, the event on February 19 has attracted so much interest it is being moved to the 400-seat theatre in Kings Place, King’s Cross.
A relief for all.
