Traffic lights inanity

Published: 2 February, 2012

• I am mystified why Camden Council officers and the cabinet member for sustainability and transport still want to continue with their project to have no traffic lights at all at the junction of Plender Street and Bayham Street and to instal instead a raised Zebra crossing.

They seem to think that this will be safer and better for pedestrians and cyclists.

So far having no traffic lights there has led to three accidents, one with a bus and a cab etcetera over the past four weeks and constituents of mine have told me of their real fear at trying to cross a busy road like Bayham Street with cars rushing down at speed and no lights!

I arranged a meeting last week with officers and the cabinet member – who does a great job and whom I respect – but in this case I have to say I am very concerned at the advice he seems to have had that taking away traffic lights at a busy junction is a good idea…the meeting was attended by local representatives from Bayham estate, Curnock estate and College Place estate and local residents who indicated their displeasure.

We were assured that the project would be reassessed within a few months.

I hope that in that time there will be no accidents or worse.

Taking away traffic lights at busy junctions is frankly inane and not acceptable.

Watch this space.
